Bangalore landfill base lining
India, Kolkata
Nonwoven geotextiles as protection layer
Problem:
the Bangalore landfill was designed in response to the growing protests from environmentalists and local community representatives regarding damage to the environment and the health of residents living in neighbouring villages.
More specifically, leachate seeps from the illegal dumping of rubbish, prior to construction of the landfill, have polluted the groundwater, the only one drinking water resource for locals and livestock. In addition, the nearby military airport and Bangalore International Airport, both at less than 20 km far from the landfill site, had experienced a numbers of accidents (bird-strike) as a result of the high numbers of birds in the area.
Extremely urgent action was therefore required to clean up the illegal dumping ground and create a new storage site. The site location presented the water table almost at the ground level: waterproofing, drainage of water and leachate treatment were issues of primary importance.
Solution:
Considering the good load-bearing properties of subgrade soil, the decision was to focus entirely on primary waterproofing system and on its protection.
Taking into account the length of the side slopes (55 m), despite their shallow gradient, the decision was to use different types of nonwoven geotextiles to protect the 2,00 mm HDPE geomembrane effectively.
Geodren PPST 2000, nonwoven geotextile made from high tenacity polypropylene, was installed on the bottom of the landfill, under the geomembrane.
Geodren PPST 400 was laid on top of the geomembrane to protect it from possible punctures or ease mechanical stress that might be caused from differential settlement of the waste.
Geodren PPST 1200 was used on the side slopes to ensure an effective protection. In addition, thanks to its weight and its UV treatment, it was effectively the right choice to answer completely to environmental and technical requirements .
