Coastal defence at Mamaia beach on the Black Sea

Romania, Black Sea coast, Mamaia beach
Tubular geofilter as coastal defence and woven geogrids as reinforcement for the foundation under the sea level.

Problem:
Mamaia beach was affected by a strong erosion in the last 30 years. Mamaia is a very famous touristic area especially during spring and summer, bathers flock to this area for many years but due of coastal erosion the space continued to be less and less year by year. All previous and traditional nourishment systems weren’t effective, sand continued being eroded by sea. National authority for the environment and coastal protection was looking for a durable and effective solution and they decided to invest in a huge project to preserve the coast and the tourism.

Solution:
After an accurate study of tides and currents, the parties involved have developed a modern coastal erosion control.

EDILFLOOR solution can be resumed as follow:

  • supply of reinforcement geocomposites (EDILGRID® COMP) as foundation under groynes formed by big stones placed off the coast.
  • supply of groynes perpendicular placed to the existing beach, distance between them 150 – 200 m, length of each groyne 80 – 90 meters. These groynes were made by SINTEXTUBE® (2,5 meters of diameter – height 1,0 meter) made of PP woven geotextile. EDILFLOOR installed over 550 linear meters of SINTEXTUBE®.

All groynes made by SintexTube are a kind of “ribs” to defend the new coast from erosion. Sand dredged by Boskalis vessel (around 700.000 cubic meter) fully covered groynes made by SINTEXTUBE. This kind of hidden structure is now able to preserve the coast from a fast and dangerous erosion. The result is a wider shoreline (more than 60 – 70 meters) and the guarantee in the next years Mamaia beach will be in safe from all erosion phenomena.
