Main functions

EN ISO 10318 international standard defines 8 main functions for geosynthetics: separation, filtration, drainage, protection, reinforcement, erosion control, stress relief.
All Edilfloor geosynthetics can fulfill to one or more functions among those listed below.

Funzione separazione geotessili Edilfloor

Separation

One of the main functions of Edilfloor geosynthetics is separation: the material keeps two soil layers with different particle size distributions distinct, preventing their intermixing. Geodren® nonwoven geotextiles separate the road embankment material from the underlying foundation soil. This function is particularly important when the in-situ soil does not have adequate geotechnical characteristics.

Separation ensures that the original thickness of each soil layer is maintained, with significant cost benefits. In combination with the filtration function, it also prevents the migration of fine particles from the subgrade into the granular material that typically forms the road base.

Funzione filtrazione geotessili Edilfloor

Filtration

One of the main functions of Edilfloor geosynthetics is filtration: the material allows water to pass through freely while preventing the migration of fine particles. Geodren® geotextiles perform this function in various application contexts:

• as a filter layer at the base or behind road and railway embankments;
• on the outside of drainage pipes, to ensure their long-term efficiency;
• in NewDrain® and SintexDrain® drainage geocomposites, to prevent clogging of the drainage core even under high operating pressures;
• beneath rip-rap and other facing materials in coastal and riverbank protection systems.

Funzione protezione geotessili Edilfloor

Protection

One of the main functions of Edilfloor geosynthetics is the protection of geomembranes and waterproofing systems. Geodren® nonwoven geotextiles provide puncture resistance to protect waterproofing layers. They are used in a variety of contexts:

• landfills for solid and liquid waste;
• tunnel construction;
• dams, reservoirs and artificial lakes;
• roofs of residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Funzione rinforzo geosintetici Edilfloor

Reinforcement

Edilfloor geosynthetics perform a structural reinforcement function, acting within or in combination with the soil to produce a composite material with mechanical properties, strength and deformability superior to those of unreinforced soil. Geodren® W-PP and Geodren® W-PES woven geotextiles and Edilgrid® geogrids provide tensile strength to the soil mass.
They are used in a variety of contexts:

• construction of vertical or near-vertical slopes (reinforced earth walls);
• construction of embankments on soft foundation soils;
• construction of embankment slopes steeper than would be possible with unreinforced soil;
• construction of bridges over cavities, using Edilgrid® and Edilgrid® Comp.

Drainage

One of the main functions of Edilfloor geosynthetics is drainage: the material collects and conveys fluids in the presence of low-permeability soils. Geodren® geotextiles dissipate interstitial pressures caused by water at the base of road embankments. NewDrain® and SintexDrain® drainage geocomposites, designed to handle high water flows, are used in a variety of contexts:

• drainage at the base of road embankments;
• drainage trenches alongside road pavements;
• interception drains on slopes;
• drainage behind retaining walls and reinforced earth structures.

Funzione controllo erosione geostuoie biostuoie Edilfloor

Erosion control

Edilfloor geosynthetics reduce soil erosion caused by rainfall impact and surface water runoff. For erosion control, Edilfloor offers biodegradable natural fibre erosion control mats and geomats: JuteNet®, StrawMat® and SintexMat®. These products protect the soil surface during the most critical phases, while promoting vegetation establishment.

Funzione distensione geocompositi Edilfloor

Stress relief

Edilfloor geosynthetics perform a crack reflection control function within bituminous pavements. The GlassComp® geocomposite, placed between the different asphalt layers, distributes mechanical stresses and slows the propagation of fractures and cracks.

This significantly extends the service life of the pavement.
GlassComp® is used both in the rehabilitation of existing pavements and in the construction of new road infrastructure.
